With a record crowd already registered, the final deadline is Monday, September 9, for reservations for the third Lunch and Laughs with a Legal Legend event, which will be held on Friday, September 13, 2013, at the Erickson Alumni Center in Morgantown. U. S. District Court Judge Irene M. Keeley of Clarksburg will be the honored guest for this “friendly roast” that will begin at 11:30 AM and conclude by 1:00 PM.

WVU College of Law Professor Emeritus Jack Bowman will be serving as the Master of Ceremonies. The “roasters”, who will tell humorous stories about Judge Keeley, are U. S. District Court Chief Judge John P. Bailey (Wheeling), entrepreneur Pat Bibbee (Charleston) and attorney Robert  M. Steptoe, Jr. (Bridgeport).               The following distinguished entities have agreed to serve as Sponsors for this excellent endeavor-J. F. Allen Company/ Jackson Kelly/ Kay, Casto and Chaney/ McNeer, Highland, McMunn and Varner/ Phillips, Gardill, Kaiser and Altmeyer/ Spilman, Thomas and Battle/ Steptoe and Johnson/ Tenmile Land/ White Law Office/ the WV Bar Foundation/ the WVU College of Law and the WVU President’s Office.

The proceeds from this worthwhile activity will be shared by Judge Keeley’s designated choice of law student clinics at the WVU College of Law and for Bar Foundation grants to improve the     administration of justice in the state.  Sponsorships of $2,000 provide a reserved table with 10 seats. Individual tickets can be purchased for $60. A Good Time for a Good Cause!

 

BAR FOUNDATION MEMBERSHIPS AND CONTRIBUTIONS           In the past two weeks, there have been additional attorneys making annual membership payments for the July, 2013-June, 2014 fiscal year and making contributions to improve the administration of justice in the state . The annual membership fee is $50 with the Lifetime membership fee being $500. (Bar Foundation Fellows are automatically Lifetime members.)

Joseph Beeson from Charleston, a Bar Foundation Lifetime Member, made a substantial contribution that will provide increased services to meet the organization’s priorities.

Debra Hovatter from Morgantown became a regular member and then made an additional contribution to be used for necessary programs and activities.

Robert Full from Parkersburg renewed his long standing regular membership in the Bar Foundation.

The Bar Foundation’s Independent auditing firm has stated that membership dues paid by an individual can deduct their dues payments on their personal return as an itemized deduction on Schedule A, subject to income limits that need to be determined on an individual basis.  If it is a orporation or business paying the dues, they are fully deductible on their business tax returns as professional dues.

The Bar Foundation remains extremely grateful for the interest and support of the lawyers and law offices in the state. Please consider recommending Bar Foundation membership to your colleagues so that there can continue to the worthwhile charitable work accomplished by WV’s philanthropic organization for the legal profession and the justice system. 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

ABA/BAR FOUNDATION FELLOWS-             On Friday, August 16, the annual joint luncheon for the Fellows of the American Bar Foundation and the WV Bar Foundation was held during the WV Bar Association’s Annual Meeting at the Homestead Resort in Virginia. The vast majority of ABA Fellows are also Bar Foundation Fellows and there were approximately 40 Fellows in attendance. The Bar Foundation served as a Sponsor for the event along with the following law firms-Brewster Morhous/ Bowles Rice/ Campbell Woods/ Flaherty Sensabaugh/ Huddleston Bolen/ Jackson Kelly/ Phillips Gardill/ Spilman Thomas and Steptoe & Johnson. There was extended discussion regarding a mentoring program here in West Virginia,  which would utilize ABA Fellows, Bar Foundation Fellows and American Inns of Court members .
