LEGAL AND POLICY FELLOWSHIP

       Last year, the Bar Foundation Board of Directors approved an innovative grant to support a Philanthropic Legal and Policy Fellowship for a law student at the WV College of Law. The student selected to serve the Fellowship was Jackson Butler, a second year law student at that time.

       In a recent report from Paul Daugherty, the President of Philanthropy WV, the statewide charitable organization of community, family, corporate and private foundations where Jackson was the Fellow, Paul stated—          Mr. Jackson coordinated “U.S. Congressional and Federal Agency relations to prepare for Philanthropy West Virginia’s delegation attending the 2016 Foundations on the Hill.” Pictured above during the visit to Washington, DC are, from left to right, Paul Daugherty, Tres Ross (Ross Family Foundation), Senator Shelley Moore Capito, Dr. Michelle Foster (Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation), Adam Sanders (Steeley Foundation) and Jackson Butler.

           In addition, Mr. Daugherty reported that Jackson helped to “ensue the renewal of the WV Neighborhood Investment Program for another five years”, developed a new WV commission of state government officials to coordinate and collaborate with WV’s philanthropy leaders and worked with “community foundations that are considering gifts of natural resources mineral rights/assets.”

           Jackson is heavily involved with leadership activities during his current third year at the Law School, including Student Bar Association President, Moot Court Board member, Tax Law Society and the Black Law Student Association Vice President.

            Valuable faculty oversight and assistance for the Fellowship was provided by WVU College of Law Professor Elaine Wilson.

BAR FOUNDATION FELLOWS NOMINATIONS       Bar Foundation Fellows hold a special position with this organization. As preparations begin for the 19th Foundation Fellows Dinner, which will be held on April 27, 2017, at the Marriott Hotel in Charleston, the Bar Foundation needs the involvement and assistance of its Fellows.              Each Fellow is requested to make nominations for lawyers and members of the federal and state judiciary to be members of the 19th class of Foundation Fellows. There are specific requirements for the Fellows Program and they are: “West Virginia Bar Foundation Fellows – Those lawyers whose professional, public and private careers have demonstrated outstanding dedication to the welfare of their  communities and honorable service to the legal profession with the individuals selected reflecting the diverse nature of the legal profession in West Virginia.”        

             Current Fellows are requested to send their suggestions to be considered in the 2017 class by no later than OCTOBER 27, 2016.
