EDWIN F. FLOWERS-   Edwin F. Flowers, a distinguished jurist and lawyer whose public service career spanned more than a half century, passed away on January 27 in Morgantown.   Justice Flowers, who is pictured with Ellie, his wife of 66 years, was a WV Bar Foundation Fellow. Ellie and he were the honorees at the Bar Foundation’s Lunch and Laughs with Legal Legends event in 2020. Ellie served as the Assistant Dean of Career Services at the WVU College of Law for approximately two decades.   Besides serving as a WV Supreme Court Justice in the mid-1970’s, he provided his leadership as the U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the Southern District of WV, Commissioner of the WV Department of Welfare (now WV Health and Human Resources), Vice President for Institutional Advancement at WVU, an attorney for the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General’s Corps, and many other private and public entities.   WV Supreme Court Chief Justice John Hutchison stated-“I am terribly saddened to hear of the passing of one of our own. His exemplary career stands as a monument to his personal dedication to the law, as well as to the citizens of West Virginia. He was a true leader and will be sadly missed.”   All honor to his name. ______________________________________________________   PROFESSOR MARJORIE MCDIARMID-   Professor Marjorie McDiarmid, the Steptoe and Johnson Professor of Law and Technology at the WVU College of Law, has received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of American Law Schools.   Professor McDiarmid, who is a Bar Foundation Fellow and served two terms on the Bar Foundation’s Board of Directors, directed and expanded the Legal Clinic for law students at the Law School, as well as teaching courses to the law students during her 35year career. She relinquished her leadership duties at the Legal Clinic last year and continues teaching evidence, civil procedure and other courses.   College of Law Dean Amelia Rinehart stated-“Over the course of her career and continuing today, Professor McDiarmid changed the landscape of clinical legal education and has trained hundreds of lawyers to carry those same values of service and leadership to their communities.”   Congratulations to Professor McDiarmid for this well-deserved award! _______________________________________________________   GRANTS COMMITTEE-   The Bar Foundation’s Grants Committee will meet later this month to consider grant applications and make recommendations to the Board of Directors for action.   As the philanthropic organization for West Virginia’s legal profession and justice system, the Bar Foundation provides financial grants to non-profit entities to improve the administration of justice and the provision of legal services to WV’s citizens. ______________________________________________________   UPCOMING BAR FOUNDATION DATES:   Bar Foundation Fellows Dinner – April 21, 2022-Save the Date Lawyers Leadership Institute – May 20-22, 2022 Lunch & Laughs with a Legal Legend – September 9, 2022-Save the Date   ‌
