LUNCH AND LAUGHS-WVU LAW SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS
Last November, WVU College of Law Dean Emeritus John Fisher was the honored guest for the Second Lunch and Laughs with a Legal Legend event, which was a friendly roast of Dean Fisher by his friends and colleagues. The proceeds from this successful endeavor were equally divided between Dean Fisher’s choice of Law School student scholarships and Bar Foundation grants.
Recently, a contribution of nearly $8,000 was presented to the College of Law for these scholarships. Pictured above are Dean Emeritus Fisher and Dean Joyce McConnell in the main hallway of the College of Law in Morgantown. Both Deans are Bar Foundation Fellows and have served as members of the Bar Foundation’s Board of Directors.
As can be seen in the background of the photo which was taken in early April, the construction work continues at a rapid pace for the major re-modeling and additions that are occurring at the Law School building. Numerous lawyers, law offices and entities have provided funds to enhance and improve this important facility for our legal profession and the justice system.

Judge Donald H. Cookman, a Bar Foundation Fellow, was sworn in as a State Senator on January 31, 2013 during a well attended ceremony in the Senate chambers at the State Capitol in Charleston. He was appointed to the position by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin to serve several counties in the eastern panhandle of the state.
Senator Cookman, who served as the Circuit Court Judge for the 22nd Judicial Circuit for 20 years, was administered the oath of office by Circuit Court Judge Thomas H. Keadle (26th Judicial Circuit) on his last
day in that position after 28 years as Judge Keadle retired and assumed senior status. Interestingly, Judge Keadle’s first assignment as a Senior Status Judge was to preside over the docket in Judge Cookman’s former courtroom, beginning on February 1, 2013.
Pictured above are Judge Keadle, on the left, and Senator Cookman, on the right. The Senator and the Judge are brothers-in-law. Congratulations to Senator Cookman for his successful career as a member of the judiciary as he undertakes his new responsibilities in a different branch of state government and to Judge Keadle for his many years of judicial service to West Virginia!

DONATIONS TO BAR FOUNDATION
The Bullying Prevention program, mentioned above, is just one example of the significant programs and services that are supported by WV Bar Foundation grants which the Board of Directors distributes from the charitable donations that are received each year.
Past grants have been awarded for student scholarships and legal programs at the WVU College of Law, civic education programs such as WV Law Adventure and We, the People, and child abuse and neglect prevention endeavors as provided by ChildLaw and local child advocacy centers.
Please consider making a tax deductible contribution to the WV Bar Foundation so that the Board of Directors can increase its strong commitment to assisting those activities in the state that improve the administration of justice and the provision of legal services.
You can easily make donations electronically on the Bar Foundation’s homepage on the new website— www.wvbarfound.org —-or send a check to WV Bar Foundation, P. O. Box 4845, Charleston, WV 25364.
Do it before December 31, 2012.
Thank You for your valuable consideration!
