LUNCH AND LAUGHS HONOREE-KEN GRAY
The WV Bar Foundation’s Board of Directors is very pleased to invite members of the judiciary, the legal profession and the general public to attend the 9th Lunch and Laughs With A Legal Legend on Friday, September 13, 2019, at the Erickson Alumni Center in Morgantown, beginning at 11:30 AM, where the honored guest will be U. S. Army Judge Advocate General (ret.) and former WVU Vice President Ken Gray, who is pictured above. Lunch and Laughs events are not to be missed. Three “roasters” will have the opportunity to tell stories and tales about the General, and they are former WVU President David Hardesty, former WVU College of Law Dean John Fisher and former WVU Foundation Vice President Lyn Dotson, with Charleston Attorney Kitty Dooley serving as the Master of Ceremonies. The proceeds from the Lunch are designated to General Gray’s choice of the Veterans’ legal clinic at the WVU College of Law, as well as for Bar Foundation grants. Sponsorships of $2,000 are provided a reserved table with 10 seats. Individual tickets can be purchased for $60. A majority of the amount is tax deductible. BAR FOUNDATION GRANTS
During its June 6 quarterly meeting, the Bar Foundation Board of Directors approved two grants—one to the WV Child Advocacy Network and the other grant for the continuation of its Public Service Scholarship for students at the WVU College of Law for the 2019-20 academic year. The full tuition and fees scholarship is awarded to a law student, selected by a faculty committee, who has a commitment to pursuing a legal career in public service. Previous individuals have worked in legal aid offices, served as a clerk for a Federal Appeals Court Judge and as an intern for a U.S. Bankruptcy Court Judge, as well as handling public interest legal cases. The WVCAN grant will be used for its Leadership Cohort Initiative which will focus on the Child Advocacy Center director’s role in facilitating multidisciplinary investigative team meetings in child abuse and neglect cases. These latest grants bring the total to 73 grants provided since the first Bar Foundation grant in 2004 with the total amount being more than $393,000, with approximately $375,000 of it occurring in just the past eleven years. In addition, eight grants from Lunch and Laughs events have generated more than $74,000 for public education and law student scholarships. The 73 grants are in the following categories: Public Education- $86,684 (26 Grants) Law Student Scholarships- $189,005 (12 Grants) Legal Services for Low Income Citizens- $40,634 (6 Grants) Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention- $61,154 (26 Grants) Lawyer Assistance Program- $15,000 (3 Grants) A Very Big Thank You to the judges, lawyers, state organizations and community leaders, who have made tax deductible contributions to the Bar Foundation, which make these grants to help our citizens during their time of need! ________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________
