ACADEMIC SUPPORT GRANT Last year, the Bar Foundation made a grant to Child Protect of Mercer County for necessary services to children “to improve the strength, resilience and character…through character building workshops, addressing basic needs and providing academic support to be successful in school.” Pictured above are two of the 83 children in the local community who participated in this worthwhile program. The grant was in the amount of $2,250. When the grant was made, almost 50% of the participating children were reading at least one grade below level. “After completion of our academic support program, all students in the program we were assisting were reading at grade level”, according to the grant’s final report. Child Protect used the Bar Foundation grant in combination with other funding sources, such as the United Way of the Virginias, Starting Points and the Community Foundation of the Virginias, as well as in-kind donations from local churches and other agencies. Thanks to your support, these children received the academic support they need to make long term change and improve their future!
