SUCCESSFUL LAWYER LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE

      The Bar Foundation hosted the sixth Lawyer Leadership Institute on May 19-21, at Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, WV. Pictured above is U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Aloi, on the left, interacting with the younger upcoming lawyer leaders during his presentation to them.

      This year’s successful event was sponsored by Antero Resources Corporation with the valuable assistance of its Vice President of Government elations, Kevin Ellis, Esq.

      The Institute’s objective is to provide newer lawyers with specific education and professional training that will enable them to become leaders in the legal profession, in their communities and in the State. The featured judges and lawyers have excellent expertise and knowledge in leadership skills. The diverse speakers and their topics were:   

Professionalism Leadership-U.S. District Court Judge John Bailey-Wheeling Interpersonal Leadership-U.S. Magistrate Judge Michael Aloi-Clarksburg Public Service Leadership-WV Circuit Court Judge Alan Moats-Grafton Leadership Traits-WVU Law School Professor Emeritus Jack Bowman-Morgantown  Civility Leadership-Brenda Waugh, Esq.-Martinsburg             Organizational Leadership-Elliot Hicks, Esq.-Charleston

Ethical Leadership-Rebecca Tinder, Esq.-Charleston

 

        The entire program is approved for twelve mandatory continuing legal education credits here in West Virginia with three credits of those twelve credits in the area of legal ethics.

        The attendance is limited to a maximum of twelve younger lawyers who have demonstrated leadership qualities. This year’s participants were:

         The Institute and the location at the Stonewall Resort were evaluated by the attendees on a 1-5 basis (5 is highest) with the Institute receiving an overall rating of 4.7 and Stonewall receiving 4.1. The judges and lawyers, who made the presentations, received average scores from 3.9 to 4.9.

         Each of the attendees confirmed that they would recommend the Institute to other younger lawyer leaders and here are just some of the specific comments that were placed on the evaluation forms:

  • Enjoyed the accessibility of all of the speakers and their thoughtfulness and willingness to answer questions.
  • This really gave me a lot to think about.
  • The small group is great.
  • This was a very unique learning experience.
  • I think all of the presentations had value and the speakers were outstanding.
  • As someone who has not been in practice long, I especially enjoyed interacting with judges and longtime practitioners.
  • Great for interaction with speakers and other young lawyers.
  • Outstanding speakers and well organized.

 

         The Bar Foundation wishes to express its utmost appreciation to the highly respected judges and lawyers who made the well received presentations, to the younger lawyer participants who are rising stars in leadership roles in the legal profession, their communities and the state, and to Antero Resources Corporation whose sponsorship commitment enabled the Institute to be another successful endeavor!

 

 

GENEROUS CONTRIBUTION

     The WV Bar Foundation Board of Directors wishes to express its sincere appreciation for the generous donation which was made recently by Barb and Mike Benninger of Morgantown.

      Mike is a well known and highly regarded lawyer, who was selected by his peers as a Bar Foundation Fellow several years ago. Mike and Barbara have been ongoing supporters of the Bar Foundation’s programs and activities over the years and they have been recognized leaders in the legal profession and in their local community.

       We thank them for their gracious contribution and wish them the very best in the future.
