BAR FOUNDATION GRANT-LAW ADVENTURE PROGRAM

In fulfilling its mission of improving the administration of justice, the WV Bar Foundation provided a grant to the WV Supreme Court to support its successful Law Adventure Program.

This mock trial program requires participating classes to write their own scripts based on one of three criminal case scenarios, which change each year. The case scenarios are written by the Young Lawyers Section of the West Virginia State Bar. Each participating class must act out its script in front of a judicial officer – a magistrate, family court judge, or circuit judge – before sending in its entry.

Then, winners in each category are invited to watch the Supreme Court in action. Pictured above are students and teachers from Stonewall Jackson Middle School in Kanawha County, who observed the Supreme Court’s Argument Docket at the State Capitol at the end of April. They were the winners in the middle school combined category.

Other category winners were East Fairmont High School in Marion County (high School twelfth-grade winner),

Roane-Jackson Technical School (high school combined grades winner) and Prichard Elementary School in Wayne County (fifth-grade winner).             Since making its first grant in 2004, the Bar Foundation has provided  almost fifty grants and distributions for a total of more than a quarter of a million dollars to worthwhile charitable organizations in WV, with more than forty grants and $240,000 occurring in just the past seven years.

Through its Justice Fund, the Bar Foundation plans to dramatically increase its philanthropic activities on behalf of the legal profession and the judicial system.
